The Sound of Music exhibition in the Panorama Museum

From November 4 2011, the Panorama Museum (Salzburg Museum) presents a yearlong special exhibition on the Trapp Family.
In order to get an idea and to tout for our guests, we visited the museum.
The show will focus on the true story of the family’s life and contrast the family history with the myth portrayed in the musical and the movie.
Many of the original objects are family-owned, some photographs are from private albums and some are loan collections from collectors or museums and they all document the “real” life of the von Trapps.
Exhibition stands show what the german movies from 1956 and 1958, the Musical from 1959 and the implementation of the Hollywood movie made out of the story.

Entering the exhibition, first of all you see the property of different dresses and garments of Georg and Maria von Trapp. The first floor shows you round through the life of the Trapp family, beginning in the Salzburg-time and ending with the emigration to the USA.
The ground floor introduces you with the books of Maria von Trapp, which she sold so that the beginning of the “Sound of Music” success could take its course.
As above-mentioned, a lot of movies were filmed, but only the Hollywood movie enjoyed great popularity. The musical was performed all over the world, until then it returned to its hometown Salzburg in 2011.
Visiting this exhibition, you can put oneself in the position of the Trapp family and so you go on a journey into the past.

Additionally, more than 180 photos and 100 original objects are presented, which partly are shown for the first time ever in public!
Altogether, the Panorama Museum is really worth a visit.

Following you can see the most beautiful pictures, as well as a fascinating time table.

Tourist traps in Salzburg

Those visiting a city are always given tips and suggestions by different people as regards what to do and the sights to be visited in any case. They however don’t use to get informed about what not to do and things to be avoided. That’s why we have unceremoniously decided to explain you Salzburg’s “most important tourist traps“.

Tourist traps in Salzburg:

Don’t buy “Mozartkugeln” in the historic center:

You’ll obviously find the famous “Mozart balls” anywhere in Salzburg’s historic center, be it in different   souvenir shops or on markets – you are offered Salzburg “Mozart balls” on any corner, though for increased prices.

Our suggestion: buy these small delicacies in a supermarket or in the Duty Free Shop at the airport, where they are offered for a reasonable price. Our Salzburger Hof staff will be pleased to inform you about the nearest store.

Avoid visiting the city within a large group:

Particularly during summer months, Salzburg is teeming with tourists and that’s what it makes difficult to discover the city’s true beauty. Avoid starting your city tour within tourist groups. Get first informed about the most important sights, insiders’ venues, and eventual promenades – this way, you’ll get a much deeper insight into our town. Our female staff at the reception desk of Salzburger Hof will of course help you to do so.

Go to the right restaurants:

Best food is offered on Salzach River’s right bank. Restaurants situated in the historic center use to serve luxurious menus at superlunary prices. To get traditional Salzburg type cuisine, you should look around the neighborhood of Linzergasse or Steingasse. Here are some inns offering an actually very good cuisine and being less tourism oriented.

Don’t choose a crowded tavern for a drink:

During high season, don’t choose famous inns for having a drink. They use to be completely stormed by tourists und you’ll wait for a seat in vain. Observe where Salzburg natives use to go or just get a hint from the staff of Salzburger Hof.

Don’t select the first available sightseeing tour:

You should in no case opt for the first available sightseeing tour. You’ll see that innumerous tours are offered in Salzburg, in particular as regards the “Sound of Music”. First compare the prices and then deliberate what you really want. The easiest way: book your tour directly at our hotel’s reception desk where you’ll find a very fine selection.

Don’t buy your O-Bus tickets in the bus:

Avoid buying bus tickets in the bus! Prepaid tickets are in any case cheaper; you can buy them at the reception desk of Salzburger Hof. Also the 24 hours ticket is available as prepaid ticket at a lower price than in the busses.

Waldklang – An Outstanding Christmas Market

In the Waldbad Anif you can find a very specific christmas market.  Already three times this outstanding winter festival took place at the beautiful lake. We were also there and were very impressed of the art, the culture and the culinary art.  The Waldbad which is a very famous summer spot for swimming has been turned to an idyllic christmas market.

Your attention should be paid to the miraculous light and sound installationes. I really enjoyed the varios booths with the different arts and crafts. It is kind of hard to leave without a small gift J Furthermore the culinary delicacies are very recommendable too. We enjoyed the traditional „Salzburger Kasnockn“ and as a dessert a delicious „Bauernkrapfen“. I think there is plenty of food for everybody. Moreover you can find contemporary exhibitions, movie shows, readings, performances, workshops and concerts. Sunday is family day! Children are enjoying exciting wood expeditions, fairytale readings and pony riding. In our opinion this christmas market differs from the other traditional ones in his alternative approach and is a must for everybody.

Salzburg is crazy about The Sound of Music

After countless performances on the Broadway in New York and in various other countries the musical has finally returned back to his hometown. The story of the novice Maria, who worked in the interwar period as a nanny in the house of the Trapp family, married widower Georg von Trapp and became famous with the family choir, is world-famous since 1965. Although thousands of tourists have been visiting various movie locations in Salzburg, where Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer were singing and dancing, the movie has been widely unknown here in Salzburg and Austria ever since.

This has changed rapidly since the premiere of the successful musical took place at Salzburger Landestheater on 23rd of October. Tears, felicity, emotions and an audience singing along with the actors have been characteristic for the nearly 3 hours long premiere.

“An outstanding performance was delivered by Wietske van Tongeren as Maria von Trapp. At the beginning her voice was still a little bit squeaky and nasal, but she was enhancing constantly – both in her singing and dancing – and finally offered a stirring performance as the novice, governess and baroness. Uwe Kröger as the Baron of Trapp did not make the most of his performance though. If you listen to his old musical productions and read the critics of his career, you will get the feeling that Kröger wasn’t delivering his best performance at the premiere.“ (news.at)

For about two weeks now Sound of Music is enchanting his audience. A lot of people in Salzburg have already taken “their” musical straight into their hearts, others are calling it “… a nice musical, which is addressing even more the taste of American people than the pampered musical visitors in this country“ (Peter Krachowitzer). However, dedicated fans of the story are just feeling a kind of “Edelweiss euphoria“.

For getting into the right mood for the musical or to finish the evening off in a Sound of Music style, just book a room in our hotel Der Salzburger Hof, where you will be transferred by our Sound of Music rooms in the world of the Trapp family. Here you also have the opportunity to see original pictures of the Sound of Music shooting in the Sound of Music corridor. And if you only prefer to make yourself comfortable and take it easy, you can surely rent the original Sound of Music movie in our hotel’s own video shop. Your Sound of Music heart will be beating faster anyway!

A City of Dreams

Anneliese Donhauser visited this special exhibition of the Cathedral museumin Salzburg and was impressed by the attention to detail of the city views done by painter Georg Pezolt in the 19th century. This exhibition can be visited until the 26th of October but also the permanent exhibitions including the cathedral treasure or the curiosities in the Cabinet of Art and Curiosities.

The “long gallery” (70 m) of St. Peter’s Abbey can only be visited via the Cathedral museum. It gives a first impression of how impressive the route within the buildings around the Cathedral square will be once all sites will be opened.

The access to “A City of Dreams” is made via the organ loft of the Cathedral. From there you have an impressive view of the nave. While visiting the Cathedral the Berkshire Choral Festival Choir accompanied by the orchestra of the Cathedral Music Salzburg was practicing. The music was heard in all rooms of the museum and made this visit to a very special one.
